How to Apply for a Passport in India: Required Documents & Complete Process
Applying for an Indian passport is now simpler than ever through the digital process. Here is the complete, step-by-step guide on the required documents and where you need to go.
1. Mandatory Documents Required
To apply for a fresh ordinary passport, you primarily need proof of address, proof of date of birth, and documentary proof for the Non-ECR category (if applicable).
Proof of Date of Birth (DOB) (Any One):
Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births & Deaths.
Transfer/Matriculation/School Leaving Certificate issued by the school or recognized educational board.
PAN Card issued by the Income Tax Department.
Aadhaar Card / E-Aadhaar.
Proof of Present Address (Any One):
Water Bill / Electricity Bill (Must be in the applicant's name and from the current year).
Aadhaar Card.
Current and valid Passbook of a running Bank Account (Scheduled Public Sector Banks, Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks and Regional Rural Banks only).
Rent Agreement (Registered).
Non-ECR (Emigration Check Not Required) Proof:
Matriculation (10th standard) or higher educational pass certificate. (If you have this, you don't need emigration checks when travelling abroad for work).
2. Step-by-Step Process: Where Do You Need to Go?
The process is divided into two parts: Online Registration and In-Person Verification.
Step 1: Online Registration & Form Submission
Visit the official website: passportindia.gov.in
Register as a new user and create your login ID.
Fill out the online application form carefully with your personal details, address, and family history.
Pay the Fee & Schedule Appointment:
Pay the required application fee online via Net Banking, Credit/Debit card, or UPI, and choose your preferred date and time slot for the visit.
Step 2: The In-Person Visit (Where to Go?)
On the day of your appointment, you must visit the designated center you selected during the booking. Depending on your location, this will be:
PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) OR
POPSK (Post Office Passport Seva Kendra)
What happens there?
You must carry all your original documents along with one set of self-attested photocopies.
Your documents will be verified, your live photograph will be taken, and your fingerprints (biometrics) will be scanned.
Step 3: Police Verification

১. প্রয়োজনীয় নথিপত্র (Required Documents)
একটি নতুন সাধারণ পাসপোর্টের আবেদনের জন্য মূলত বয়সের প্রমাণপত্র, বর্তমান ঠিকানার প্রমাণপত্র এবং নন-ইসিআর (Non-ECR) ক্যাটাগরির প্রমাণ প্রয়োজন হয়।
জন্ম তারিখের প্রমাণপত্র (যেকোনো একটি):
রেজিস্ট্রার অফ বার্থ অ্যান্ড ডেথ দ্বারা জারি করা জন্ম শংসাপত্র (Birth Certificate)।
স্কুল লিভিং সার্টিফিকেট বা মাধ্যমিকের অ্যাডমিট কার্ড/সার্টিফিকেট।
ইনকাম ট্যাক্স ডিপার্টমেন্ট দ্বারা জারি করা প্যান কার্ড (PAN Card)।

সেখানে কী হবে?

সেখানে আপনার ডকুমেন্ট যাচাই করা হবে, ডিজিটাল ছবি তোলা হবে এবং আঙুলের ছাপ (Biometrics) নেওয়া হবে।
